How Digitalization and Sustainability Are Critically Linked

Distributed generation and automated transactions are rapidly changing how we produce and consume electricity and offer alternative ways to deliver reliable and secure power, generated from various sources. This is driving new use cases for battery energy storage and microgrids―from remote regions not connected to the main grid and facing extreme conditions to urban areas with critical power reliability needs to locales and operators seeking to better manage EV charging.

At the same time, many digitalization efforts in energy are rooted by the adoption of renewable resources, as we actively try to decarbonize. This also drives increased complexity. Renewable resources are variable by nature and the grid needs new inertia and stability services to use the low-cost energy they provide. In the grid of tomorrow, data streams and an approach like AI can help us decide which actions to take. E-mobility infrastructure also requires advanced digitalization technologies to control, optimize and coordinate the vehicle charging process, including integration with battery energy storage systems and local Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).

The world is undertaking an energy transformation that will reshape electricity networks with renewable, clean, and resilient energy solutions. Yet, the electric grid and related transmission assets at the core of this energy transition were designed and built between 40 and 80 years ago - and much of that infrastructure is at or near the end of its useful life while being challenged to do more. Power utilities are at the center of this challenge; tasked with integrating record levels of new, renewable, energy assets while accommodating dramatically increased multidirectional power flows, and hardening the grid to prepare for increasingly severe weather events exacerbated by climate change. To meet the world’s ambitious climate goals, utilities must use innovative solutions to optimize the existing grid to help ensure a safe and expeditious transition to a de-carbonized world. Building new transmission will be necessary to ensure an energy transition, however given the timelines associated with financing, siting, permitting, and building new power lines, Grid Enhancing Technologies must also be utilized to optimize the existing grid. Offshore wind development costs and schedule volatility are more multifaceted and complex than other power generation development for several reasons. The projects require custom-built vessels, equipment, ports, onshore infrastructure, global sourced materials, and a uniquely trained workforce. Decades ago, high energy prices created market entry points for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Since then, market conditions have expanded coverage and evolved, and now battery energy storage is as inexpensive as it has ever been, and declining year over year, opening new markets as the cost of traditional solutions is more expensive than a BESS solution. Many different applications of BESS have been installed and operated: frequency regulation, frequency reserves; energy arbitrage; renewable energy smoothing, and time-shifting; to non-wires-alternatives that substitute for building out new transmission and distribution lines to customers. In this session, three case studies for three different customers will be discussed and lessons learned and recommendations to paths forward will be identified.

The local energy market (LEM) enables consumers and prosumers (those who can generate solar photovoltaic energy, for instance), within a defined network topology, to trade renewable energy amongst each other in a peer to peer (P2P) fashion. In this presentation, we showcase the results of a case study utilising Powerledger's blockchain enabled technology using real customer data to evaluate the performance of P2P trading. The results demonstrate mitigation in congestion and lesser dependency on the grid and reducing or deferring capital expenses for network augmentation.

Increasingly, there are solar, storage, and other resources sufficient to energize communities affected by wide-area power outages, but there are limited community-oriented control systems capable of acting on their behalf. While traditional microgrids are effective for the individual customers who own them, they do not help communities nor minimize the broader impact of outages. Present utility distribution management systems are likewise not supportive of community microgrids because they are centralized and designed to serve customers from the bulk system. If these central locations are disrupted or offline, local community systems cannot operate, regardless of their DER levels. In mid-2021, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) was tapped by the Department of Energy (DOE) to study the key technical and business challenges impeding the implementation of community microgrids through the Solar Energy CommUnity REsiliency (SECURE) project. This presentation will highlight the technology advancements and utility perspectives from the project, now in progress. Working with industry partners and electric utilities, the SECURE project aims to remove barriers to community microgrid adoption and optimize the reliability and value of distributed energy resources (DER) during normal conditions.

Session will provide current economic and operational challenges for the growing stationary energy storage industry, starting with the early project development work around utility interconnect and project siting then transitioning into engineering and major equipment procurement and contracting for construction, commissioning and asset management.  Current inflationary and global supply constraints will be discussed and potential pathways for returning to pre-COVID cost reduction projections and moving down the $/kWh cost curve for standalone energy storage projects.  Projections for technology improvements, reliability and lifecycle gains and energy density improvements for future assets will be addressed.

Refrigerated C&I warehouses spend over $40 billion on electricity annually and energy often accounts for up to 70% of the total electric bill at cold storage facilities. Low-temperature cold storage facilities have the highest demand per cubic foot of any industrial load and consume more energy than any usage category other than lighting and HVAC. Long-duration Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technology sits behind the meter and leverages the heat transference properties of phase change material and intelligent controls to reduce energy consumption and shift the demand for ~13 hours daily while better maintaining stable freezer temperatures.  This presentation will discuss energy demand in cold storage facilities, the benefits of TES for warehouses, the grid, and utilities, and cover incentive programs.

Technological innovations are driving the widespread deployment of solar plus storage (solar plus) and controllable loads. Coordinated deployment of these technologies can provide a variety of grid services including load, voltage, and frequency management. Maximizing the value of solar plus entails coordinating or orchestrating various load and output shifts through some type of centralized energy management system. A growing body of literature demonstrates the potential technical and economic value of solar plus but data-driven studies based on deployed solar plus systems are lacking. NREL has conducted an analysis of real-world data from the 3,000 solar plus homes at the Jasper Valley project in Arizona. NREL assessed the impacts of consumer behavior, home architecture, and rate design on the value delivered by solar plus homes to the distribution grid including infrastructure deferral. These real-world data were then leveraged to identify a cost reduction roadmap for similar virtual power plants (VPPs) or distributed energy resource (DER) aggregation programs to maximize deployment nationwide. In this presentation, NREL will explain how utilities can better model the impact of similar new construction projects that can reduce infrastructure requirements while providing new resources to help increase the flexibility of the distribution grid. NREL will identify opportunities and barriers to maximizing the use of VPPs nationwide and will conclude with best practices for maximizing solar plus homes benefits to the electrical grid.

Reliable power system operation with 100% inverter-based renewable generation is an unsolved and challenging problem. The main reason is that today’s power systems require that at least 25% of the load is supplied by synchronous generators at any time, e.g., gas turbines, steam turbines, or diesel generators, as documented in studies for Hawaii and Ireland. One of the most challenging factors for achieving reliable operation with 100% inverter-based renewable generation is power system stability after N-1 contingencies. This roadblock for high renewable generation can be overcome using Dynamic Security Optimization (DSO) technology for tuning controller parameters of generation units in order to improve the dynamic security of the power system. This presentation will provide an overview of the developed technology and first results from the U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E funded project with Hawaiian Electric’s, Hawai`i Island Service Territory (HECO), OPAL-RT, and PNNL. The Dynamic Security Optimization technology is unique because it allows, for the first time, reliable power system operation with 100% inverter-based renewable generation in a transmission system.

Realizing High-Volume Data Ingestion to VPP
Sponsored by Quest Global: While implementing VPP, beyond a pilot project, the data ingestion becomes a challenge due to the volume, latency, and the nature of disparate sources from which the data needs to be acquired. This high-volume data could be flowing in from millions of smart meters, thousands of gateways/edge devices/data concentrators / OT & IT systems supplied by multiple vendors, which may be supporting different protocols and data structures.  Also, maximum latency, and efficient VPP can afford depending on region-specific compliance, could be in the order of seconds which makes the whole data ingestion implementation complex. There are various technology options available today to address this data ingestion problem along with needed data formatting and data storage needs in a VPP platform implemented on cloud-native technologies. The combination of technologies needs to be chosen carefully depending on performance requirements, security, cost, availability in the chosen cloud platform, etc. In this session, we share some of the lessons learned during the implementation of VPP on different cloud platforms.
