Detailed Connection Impact Assessment for Utility-scale Battery Energy Storage
Abstract: Installation and connection of battery energy storage systems (BESS), is growing enormously because of multiple benefits they could bring to utilities and consumers. These inverter-based systems exhibit fast dynamics response to disturbances and could change the power system behavior especially in high penetration distributed energy resource (DER) areas. By developing an EMTP-RV model of the BESS and power distribution system, a range of connection impacts can be identified and assessed based on time domain analysis. Major studies include the BESS short circuit current contribution, momentary interruption, reactive support and voltage control, transient overvoltage (including ground transformer performance testing), real power (charge/discharge) ramp up/down, reactive power ramp up/down and power quality analysis (flicker and harmonic studies). In this presentation, a Detailed Technical Connection Impact Assessment (DTCIA) of a 3.2MW/6.4MWh behind-the-meter (BTM) utility scale BESS, located in Niagara region will be discussed and results will be analyzed. Discussion includes all required studies to be done to permit BESS connecting to point of connection (POC) and how to perform the study by choosing right platform, modeling, study procedure and interpretation methodology. The Studied BESS system was due to start operation in May 2020.

Energy Storage - Beyond Capacity Firming
Much of the attention and interest with energy storage has focused on the ability to firm capacity for solar generation (and to a lesser extend, wind generation) but energy storage can mimic and even outperform most generators in a variety of ways. This presentation will provide a brief overview of solar coupled and standalone energy storage system architectures before focusing on how storage systems can provide performance capabilities including: - Fast frequency response - full load response times under 250ms - Peaking capacity - both front and behind the meter applications - Islanding and grid forming - ability to support loads in the event of an outage with a seamless transition - Black-start - supporting restoration of power after a partial or total outage - Reliability - distributed design to provide high levels of reliability and availability for the generation facility - Reactive power support - the use of power electronics allows the battery energy storage system to function as a STATCOM when not in use as a BESS. And some battery-side design considerations require additional power electronics to be included in the system, allowing for a much wider power factor during charge and discharge than is required. Case studies will be provided using Mitsubishi Electric projects (solar coupled and standalone) which are operational in multiple ISOs, including our project in ERCOT which was operational throughout the 2021 winter storm and demonstrates storage's ability to provide energy and ancillary services in cold and hot extremes. And if POWERGEN sees benefit in showing the overlap with the distribution market (given the co-location with DistribuTECH) the case studies can be extended into our systems being used for distribution equipment deferral. Finally, the presentation will present the future for storage in renewable coupled and standalone applications with and without an investment tax credit (will be updated based on status of the legislation and our work with the bill sponsors).

Energy Storage Safety: Codes & Standards Update and Discussion
The safety of an energy storage system cannot be overemphasized. At the moment, in the US both manufacturers and installers refer to UL-rated systems and install to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Although energy storage standards from both organizations are relatively young (UL 9540 began in 2016; NFPA 855 in 2020), they received input from hundreds of stakeholders, including engineers, manufacturers, first-responders, and safety policymakers — all in an effort to prevent loss of life and property. There should be other standards for the rest of the world for example the EU. The panel section will discuss energy storage safety and across the world the standards being adopted. Many safety concerns, especially with lithium-based batteries, relate to thermal runaway — when a battery experiences an increase in temperature that eventually leads to cell short-circuiting or disintegration that can spark a fire. The panel discussion will address these thermal runaways and safety concerns regarding how to discard used battery systems safely.

As the market expands for projects integrating solar and wind power generation facilities with battery energy storage systems (BESS), owners and developers are negotiating two primary agreements in connection with the construction and development of these types of projects – the Equipment Purchase Agreement (EPA) for the supply of the BESS, and the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Agreement for the installation and integration of the owner-supplied BESS equipment, and the engineering, procurement and construction of the Balance of Plant (BoP). As they enter into these negotiations, owners and developers need to be aware of a number of unique issues that are present in these agreements – including around such topics as warranties (including remedies and warranty conditions), performance testing and guarantees (including what should be guaranteed and how), completion requirements and standards of performance. This presentation will explore some of these unique issues, as well as discuss possible approaches to addressing them. In addition, we will examine “Best Practices” with regard to certain key subjects in these agreements, including around such topics as delivery and risk of loss, performance testing and guarantees, and warranties and warranty conditions, as a way of best allocating risk between the owner/developer and the equipment supplier and the EPC contractor. Finally, we will address key issues and techniques that can be implemented in order to “weave” the EPA and the BoP EPC Agreement together so as to replicate (as much as possible) the near turnkey risk allocation found in the LSTK “wrap” approach.

According to Wood Mackenzie, “2020 was a record year for global energy storage.” In its recent research, the firm noted the energy storage market “is expected to grow 27 times by 2030 by adding 70 GWh of storage capacity a year to surpass 729 GWh in 2030.” It’s clear that energy storage systems (ESS) are, and will continue to be, critical in the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. But despite already demonstrating compelling economics in multiple transmission and distribution grid-connected scenarios, ESS deployments remain limited in urban areas due to safety concerns inherent in legacy battery architectures. Notably, fires involving the Arizona Public Service, NIO and Tesla – along with more than a dozen at South Korean power grid facilities – have heightened questions and concerns about lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery safety. Rightly so. Any number of fires is unacceptable; safety is always paramount. However, Li-ion batteries aren’t inherently unsafe. It’s how they’re architected that directly affects their safety. Innovative Li-ion battery architectures, paired with extensive testing and compliance requirements, are now overcoming the risks of fires and explosions. As a result, industry focus on ESS is shifting to safety, ease of installation and footprint to complement cost and performance metrics. This session will provide actionable insights on near- and longer-term urban ESS opportunities.

Bringing Safe Lithium-ion Battery Tech from Outer Space to Your Space
The growing popularity of energy storage systems has driven innovation in the industry for decades. Many of these storage systems utilize lithium-ion batteries, but there are limitations on how and where this technology can be applied due to safety concerns. While it’s common in rural areas without a dense population, urban areas are left with few energy storage options that meet state and city safety requirements. Now, technology is used to keep lithium-ion batteries safe in space is coming down to Earth to provide storage solutions for C&I, residential and medical uses. In partnership with KULR Tech Corp., Volta Energy found an innovative way to physically contain lithium-ion technology and make it safer to deploy. Its new class of battery packs virtually eliminates the thermal runaway risks associated with lithium-ion technology and is now being tested for use in what will be an industry-first: an indoor medical research facility located in New York State. The core design for Volta Energy’s new battery packs includes KULR’s HYDRA thermal runaway shield that was developed for NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover and for transporting and storing lithium-ion batteries to the International Space Station – environments in which mitigating and containing lithium-ion battery cell propagation is critical to mission success. HYDRA absorbs heat and prevents cells from entering in thermal runaway propagation. Volta Energy uses this space technology to solve for point-of-use storage in and adjacent to occupied structures. The pack system is designed to be fully independent of any secondary systems, can be installed indoors or outdoors depending on the need, and can be configured in systems to provide up to 1 MW of storage. This architecture is the only design on the market that can be safely installed in nearly any environment or location. These packs have been field-tested for over ten years in some of the harshest industrial environments and extreme climates and have experienced numerous generation changes that addressed early design failures. This discussion will feature the extensive field test results at real-world sites in New York State and discuss how Volta was able to pass the stringent state building codes to be approved for an indoor installation using lithium-ion technology. It will also feature insights from KULR about the down-to-Earth applications for its technology.
